MORE:“We have combined consignments from several estates of phonograph and music box collectors and will be offering over 500 lots of some of the rarest and most sought after machines in existence”, Donley states.

Labeled as one of the best 8 inventions of the decade, the Mills Violano is a self playing violin and automatic piano. The Violano is entirely automatic run by “electric lighting current,” that’s what electricity was called in those days. It operated on a nickel. Unlike other automatic music machines, the Violano was not operated pneumatically via a paper roll, but was electromagnetically operated with electric motors and solenoids. Mills bragged “so superior is the Violano to all other musical instruments that the U.S. government designated it as “One of the Eight Greatest Inventions of the Decade” and exhibited it at government expense at four of the greatest expositions between 1910 and 1930.” The Mills Violano is one of the rare pieces up for auction next weekend.

Phonographs Highlights Include:

• A Montross Berliner from Oliver Berliner, the grandson of Emile Berliner who invented the disc phonograph record.

• Early coin-operated cylinder phonographs including: a 24 selection Multiphone, an Edison Eclipse, Columbia B & N models, and an ultra rare Reginaphone tabletop six-cylinder machine. “There are only 5 of these tabletop Reginaphone machines known to exist”, says Donley, “And this is the only one that I know of that has ever been offered at auction.”

• In music boxes, the offerings will focus mainly on quality disc models, such as Regina changers, Symphonium boxes, a Regina Lions Head, and Empress Consoles. “All the big names will be represented with unbelievable machines being liquidated from a single collector. They are all ready to go into your home and collections”, says Donley.

Other items of interest will include an 1880 hand written letter by Thomas Edison with the original envelope from his Menlo Park, NJ laboratory, a large assortment of roller organs, pump organs, musical instruments, and a beautiful Steinway Duo Art Baby Grand piano.

“We have thousands of cylinder and disc records in the sale”, continues Donley. “They will be sold in box lots.” Also there will be hundreds of parts including reproducers, tone arms, cranks, and horns that will be sold at the start of the auction to the live audience only. “It gives the people attending the auction another reason to be there”, says Donley.

Mid Americas largest auto collection of mostly Cadillacs (over 200) plus hundreds of other cars & life time accumulation is going up on auction. Much has been stored for decades and not previously available. The Lazarus family thru Lazarus Motor Museum, their automotive collection and new and collector car dealerships has been in the automotive field in Illinois since 1913.
